The project will establish a new thematic touristic route, celebrating the iconic status, cultural heritage and economic importance of Bluefin Tuna in the Western Mediterranean, focusing initially on Cádiz (ES) and Sicily (IT). The project will build on existing public initiatives led by the individual project partners (such as La Ruta del Atún in Cádiz, Spain, and Girotonno, in Sardinia, Italy) bringing a transnational cooperation dimension and developing an international network focusing on nautical and maritime activities.
The Tuna Route will revalorise traditional tuna fisheries and the singular locations where they exist, generating also sustainable and higher quality jobs. It will diversify tourism strategies promoting also maritime sports, recreational fishing, boating and marinas. The planned thematic route brings together science, conservation, culture, gastronomy and aquaculture.
